PCGS vs. NGC??? Whats the real difference?

Looking at a certian Coin, I see two identical versions of it, year, mint, condition, etc.. etc...

But they have two listed one is:

PCGS MS-69 $24.95
and
NGC-MS-69 $22.95

Both are in same Airtite coin holders and seemingly identical except for the PCGS and NGC bit???

Whats the difference?

I've heard that one of them PCGS is slightly stricter on it's grading scale than NCG. I have nothing other than rumor to go on when I say that.

PCGS has the reputation of having the strictest grading standards, hence the premium. NGC is a solid second best; you'll see a lot more coins graded NGC MS70 than you will PCGS MS70, which demonstrates NGC's looser standards. ANACS is okay. As for other grading services, I wouldn't recommend them. You'd likely be purchasing an overgraded coin.

If you're buying graded Eagles, stick with PCGS. Tulving won't touch NGC graded Eagles, which says something, IMO.

IMO grading a bullion coin such as the US eagles is waste of money. These coins will never be numismatically collected. Just buy any newly minted Eagle and it will look just fine and you've bought metal not a collectors item.

Yep. Really that is what the extra 2 bucks is for is the reputation. Now Huxley is also correct that PCGS has a bit of higher standards as well but I think most of the time you pay for the "Brand Name" as PCGS is "it" in the grading world.

;)

You may be correct, but who would have thought that about a lot of previously minted coins

Both are the top two grading services to date. PCGS is a tad higher in price than NGC at present. Years ago NGC was ahead 10 to 20%. As long as you pick one or the other you should be OKAY. Suggest you buy the NGC silver plastic 20 coin holder boxes on Ebay or such. They fit both NGC & PCGS.

That's a simple explanation. Suggest you also do some serious work like really reading this book before you shot yourself in the foot.

Speaking of which, I have 2 NGC and 2 PCGS boxes I'd be willing to part with for a couple of ounces of silver, plus shipping. I've sold off my graded coins, so the boxes aren't needed...
